BG&A partner Adam Gustafson argued the appeal of Melissa and Aaron Klein, former proprietors of Sweetcakes by Melissa, before the Oregon Court of Appeals Thursday.
The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries ordered the Kleins to pay $135,000 for declining to design and create a custom cake to celebrate a wedding that conflicted with the Kleins’ religious beliefs.
BG&A argued that the Bureau’s order violates the Kleins’ rights to free speech and free exercise of religion under the Oregon and federal Constitutions.
